BENNETT FIT PHYSIOTHERAPY STORY

Hannah Bennett BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
MSc Sport & Exercise Medicine MHCPC, MCSP, AMPOGP, CMMOTP, MAPPI

I qualified as a physiotherapist from Manchester School of Physio in 2002. After spending 18 months in the NHS, I joined the British Army for 12 years and worked exclusively in the field of musculoskeletal, sports and trauma-related injuries facilitating rehabilitation programs, promoting physical fitness and implementing injury prevention plans in high-pressure environments. Whilst serving, I completed a masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine and provided regular physiotherapy support for Women's Army Rugby.

After the birth of my first baby, and on my final army posting in Cyprus, I became acutely aware of the challenges faced by many servicewomen following childbirth, particularly from a pelvic health perspective. There was an expectation for them to return to load carrying and running without specialist medical or physical training support. So, following my end of service in the military, I undertook further training with the Pelvic and Obstetric Gynaecological Physiotherapy Organisation and began to specialise in the field of pelvic health in addition to musculoskeletal physio.

I have seen first hand the impact that pelvic health issues can have on women's lives and athletic performance. Conditions such as pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, scar pain, sexual issues, bowel dysfunction and muscle dysfunction are more common than many realize, and they can significantly affect a woman's ability to stay active. I believe that no woman should have to choose between managing her symptoms and enjoying the activities she loves.
