Don’t Wait Until September: Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Book a Physiotherapy Appointment

Summer has a funny way of sounding relaxing in theory, doesn’t it?
Longer days, holidays, lighter evenings and maybe even a little more time outside.
But if you have children, grandchildren or a busy family life, you’ll know it often feels anything but relaxing. Routines change, days look completely different and life can feel just as full, only in a different way.
And yet, despite all of that, summer can sometimes offer something the rest of the year doesn’t.
There are no school runs to squeeze in before work. No packed lunches to make every morning. No after-school clubs or evening pick-ups to juggle. The usual mental load shifts slightly, and for some people that creates just enough breathing space to finally do something they’ve been putting off for months.
That might be booking a physiotherapy appointment.
Whether you’ve been ignoring back pain, working around a knee niggle, worrying about leaking when running, or feeling like something just isn’t quite right, you don’t have to wait until September to get help.
The niggle that keeps getting pushed down the list. In clinic, I hear versions of this all the time.
"I’ve been meaning to come for ages."
"I thought it would go away on its own."
"I hoped if I ignored it, it wouldn’t become a thing."
"I didn’t really have time to put it at the top of my list."
"I was told it was normal after childbirth, so I just tried to get on with it."
And often, by the time someone books in, it has been months. Sometimes years.
It might be a recurring running niggle that settles for a while before returning again. It might be back, hip or knee pain that you’ve gradually started working around. It might be leaking when you run, jump, cough or sneeze. It might be a feeling of heaviness, dragging, scar discomfort, postnatal symptoms, or that difficult-to-describe feeling that something just isn’t quite right.
Sometimes there’s another reason people wait.Fear.
The fear that it might be something serious. The fear of being told they have a prolapse. The fear of an examination. Or the fear that someone will tell them there’s nothing that can be done.
So they hope it settles. They adapt. They avoid certain activities. They tell themselves they’ll book when life is quieter.
But you don’t need to wait until symptoms become unbearable before asking for help. In fact, coming sooner often makes things much simpler.

Common reasons people book a summer physiotherapy appointment
You might benefit from a physiotherapy appointment if you’re dealing with:
Recurring running niggles
Back, hip or knee pain
Pelvic health symptoms
Leaking when running, jumping, coughing or sneezing
A feeling of heaviness or dragging
Scar discomfort
Postnatal recovery concerns
Pain or stiffness that keeps coming back
Difficulty returning to exercise after injury or childbirth
That general feeling that "something isn’t quite right"
These things are common, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them.
A physiotherapy appointment can help you understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and, more importantly, what you can do about them.
Why summer can be a good time to book physiotherapy
A physiotherapy appointment doesn’t have to mean adding another stressful thing to an already busy life.
Often, it does the opposite.
Instead of wondering what is going on, avoiding certain movements, Googling symptoms late at night or telling yourself you’ll deal with it later, an appointment gives you the chance to stop for a moment and understand what your body is trying to tell you.
You can find out:
What might be contributing to the problem
What movements, habits or activities may be aggravating it
What you can safely keep doing
What small changes might help
What exercises or strategies are actually relevant to you
How to make a plan that works around real life
That last point is one of the most important.
Most people are not living in perfect conditions with unlimited time for rehabilitation exercises, uninterrupted sleep and beautifully consistent routines.
Real life is messy. Your rehabilitation needs to fit around that.
Sometimes it means starting with one or two exercises that slot naturally into your week. Sometimes it means making a couple of adjustments to your running or gym programme. Sometimes it means understanding that you can keep moving, but in a slightly different way while your body settles and gets stronger.
Every plan is different because every person sitting in front of me has different goals, different pressures and a different life.
The aim is never to overwhelm you.
The aim is to help you leave feeling clearer, more confident and knowing exactly what your next step is.
Physiotherapy helps you understand the cause, not just the symptom
One of the most valuable parts of seeing a physiotherapist is gaining a better understanding of why something may be happening.
For example, knee pain isn’t always about the knee. It may be linked to hip strength, foot position, running load, training changes, movement patterns or the way your body is absorbing force.
Back pain can be influenced by strength, mobility, posture, stress, sleep, work habits, lifting techniques or activity levels.
Pelvic health symptoms, such as leaking when running or jumping, feelings of heaviness or postnatal discomfort, can also have a range of contributing factors. These symptoms are common, but they are not something you should feel you have to accept as your new normal. National guidance from NICE also recommends assessment for symptoms such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse rather than assuming they're something you have to live with.
Physiotherapy looks at the bigger picture.
That means looking at your symptoms, your body, your lifestyle, your activity levels and your goals before building a plan that is tailored to you.
What happens at your first physiotherapy appointment?
If you’ve been putting it off because you’re not sure what to expect, here’s what usually happens.
Your first appointment is relaxed, friendly and very much a conversation. The clinic is based in the countryside, providing a calm environment with both a treatment room and gym space.
We’ll begin by talking about what has brought you in and what has been bothering you.
We’ll discuss how your symptoms started, how long they’ve been there, whether they came on gradually or suddenly, and what seems to make them better or worse. That might include things like sitting, standing, walking, running, lifting, bending, exercise, rest or certain times of day.
We’ll also look for patterns.
Is it worse first thing in the morning?
Does it build throughout the day?
Is it aggravated by activity?
Does it settle afterwards?
Does it wake you at night?
Before your appointment you’ll usually have completed a questionnaire, but we’ll still talk everything through together, including your medical history, medications and anything else that helps build a full picture.
We’ll talk about what matters to you
This is one of the most important parts of the appointment. Most people begin by saying, "I just want to be pain-free." That absolutely matters. But usually, there’s something bigger underneath.
Maybe you want to run without worrying.
Maybe you want to lift your children without pain.
Maybe you want to get back to the gym.
Maybe you want to feel stronger after having a baby.
Maybe you want to walk the dog comfortably.
Maybe you want to keep up with your grandchildren.
Maybe you want to return to sport.
Maybe you want to stop planning your day around symptoms.
Understanding what matters to you helps shape the plan. Physiotherapy isn’t just about treating a sore joint or handing over a sheet of exercises. It’s about helping you get back to the things that make life enjoyable.
The physical assessment
After our conversation, we’ll move on to the physical assessment. This often starts in standing, looking at posture, balance, movement, how your feet, knees, hips and pelvis are working together, and how your body manages everyday functional movements. We may then move onto the treatment couch to assess joint movement, muscle length, mobility and strength. I may also use a dynamometer to measure muscle strength. This gives us an objective baseline that we can refer back to as you progress.
For pelvic health symptoms, we may discuss an internal examination if it is appropriate. This is always explained carefully beforehand, and nothing ever happens without your consent. The aim is to help you understand what is happening in a way that feels safe, respectful and comfortable.
You leave with a plan
At the end of the appointment, we’ll sit down together and go through everything we’ve found. I’ll explain what I’ve noticed in a way that relates back to your symptoms and your goals, so you leave understanding what may be contributing to the problem rather than just being given a list of exercises. Together, we’ll agree an initial plan, and you’ll leave with practical advice and exercises to get started.
Often, we’ll arrange a follow-up appointment quite soon afterwards so we can review your progress, adapt the plan where needed and continue building your confidence. That’s where meaningful progress happens. Not through one perfect appointment, but through understanding your body, making small changes that fit your life and having someone guide you along the way.
Maybe summer is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for
It’s easy to tell yourself that September will be a better time. That once everyone is back at school, work settles down and routines return, life will finally feel calmer. But for many families, the opposite happens. The school run starts again. Packed lunches return. Clubs and activities fill the evenings. Work becomes busier after the summer holidays, and suddenly there’s even less time to think about yourself.
If you’ve found a little more flexibility over the summer, perhaps this is actually the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Whether it’s a running niggle that keeps returning, back, hip or knee pain you’ve been managing around, leaking during exercise, feelings of heaviness, scar discomfort, or you’re just wondering whether what you’re experiencing is normal, now could be the perfect time to get some clarity.
You don’t have to wait until life is completely quiet, because for most of us, that day never really arrives.
Sometimes all it takes is one appointment to understand what’s happening, make a plan, and start moving forwards with confidence. Bennett Fit Physiotherapy supports people across East Lothian, Dunbar, North Berwick, Haddington and the surrounding area, helping you understand your symptoms and get back to the activities that matter most to you.
