The postnatal period is an incredibly special time. Life quickly becomes centred around your baby – their feeding, sleeping and settling into the world. But while all of this is happening, your body is also recovering from the huge physical changes of pregnancy and birth. Too often, that recovery is overlooked.

A MummyMOT is a specialist postnatal assessment designed to support women following childbirth, regardless of how they gave birth. Whether you had a vaginal delivery, assisted birth or caesarean section, your body and mind have been through a lot – and it deserves time, care and expert attention.
What Happens During a MummyMOT?
A Mummy MOT is a comprehensive, one-to-one assessment with a specialist women’s health physiotherapist (that’s me!). During the appointment, I will assess:
Your posture
Your abdominal muscles, including screening for diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
Your pelvic floor muscles
Any scars or wound healing, including caesarean section scars and episiotomy scars
We will also talk about how you are coping physically and emotionally with life after the arrival of your baby. Postnatal recovery isn’t just about muscles and joints – it’s also about adapting to a new rhythm of life.

Your Personalised Rehabilitation Plan
Following your assessment, I will put together a tailored rehabilitation plan to help you rebuild the foundations of your fitness safely and effectively. The aim is to support your recovery and help you return to the exercise or sport you enjoy, with confidence in your body again.
When Is the Right Time for a MummyMOT?
A MummyMOT is usually recommended around 6–8 weeks postnatal, once your body has had some initial healing time. However, if you have concerns, you can be seen earlier than this and even if you had your baby months or years ago, it is never too late to benefit from a professional postnatal assessment
Many women live with symptoms for years, assuming they are “normal after having a baby” but your symptoms can be changed, you don’t have to live with issues.
Conditions and Symptoms I Can Help With
A MummyMOT can help with a wide range of postnatal concerns, including:
Urinary or faecal urgency or incontinence
Pelvic organ prolapse
Bowel issues, including constipation
Sexual pain or discomfort
Problems arising from scars (caesarean section or episiotomy)
Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
Pelvic, lower back or hip pain
Pre- and postnatal exercise support
My clinic is just outside the village of Stenton, around 10 minutes east of Dunbar. The MummyMOT appointment lasts for 1.5 hours and you are very welcome to bring your baby.
Why Postnatal Recovery Matters
The postnatal phase is understandably focused on the baby – and that’s a wonderful thing. But it’s important not to forget that your body has also undergone major changes during pregnancy and birth. These changes need support, care and time to recover from.
Looking after yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s a vital part of your long-term health and wellbeing. A MummyMOT is an investment in your recovery, your confidence and your future fitness.
If you’d like to book an appointment or find out more, I’d be very happy to help.
